Historical city tour through Hanover's British heritage
The city tour "Hanover: Very British - In the footsteps of the personal union" offers an informative opportunity to explore the historical connection between Hanover and the British royal family. The tour leads through important places in the city that are closely linked to the personal union between the Electorate of Hanover and the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Tour programme and stops
The tour starts at Ballhofplatz and lasts around 1.5 hours. Optionally, the tour can be started with a visit to the tea room, where "Welfentee" is served - a tribute to the House of Hanover. At the end of the tour, you can enjoy a Guinness or a non-alcoholic drink in the Dublin Inn, an Irish pub in the historic city centre.
Historical insights
In 1714, Elector George Ludwig ascended the British throne as George I, marking the beginning of the personal union between Hanover and Great Britain. This union led to an intensive exchange in science, agriculture and art. The personal union ended in 1837 with the death of William IV, as the Guelph law of succession ruled out a female succession to the throne.
